De 1954-1972

"O começo na Grécia"

 

Yanni nasceu Yiannis Chryssomalis em 14 de novembro de 1954, na ilha grega de Kalamata. Filho de Sotiri e Felitsa Chryssomallis. O segundo de três filhos, Yanni tem um irmão mais velho e uma irmã mais nova. 

Os pais de Yanni proporcionaram uma vida típica grega para o menino. Ele cresceu pescando, praticando natação e indo para a escola como qualquer outro menino de sua cidade, com uma exceção. Yanni nasceu para compor música.

Compartilhando um grande amor pela música, a família passou a maior parte de seu tempo tocando e cantando juntos. E ele mostrou um talento para a música em uma idade jovem, a tocar piano aos seis anos de idade, mas ao invés de matriculá-lo na escola de música, seus pais o incentivaram a seguir a sua própria musicaa e aprender o instrumento no seu próprio ritmo e em seu próprio caminho. 

Como uma criança, Yanni ouvia música em sua cabeça e ele simplesmente queria ouvi-lo sair do piano também, então ele precisava aprender a tocar para que isso acontecesse. 

Ele tinha outros talentos também. Em 1969, com a idade de 14 anos, Yanni quebrou o recorde nacional grego de natação no estilo livre de 50 metros dos homens. Mas a música era a sua escolha.

Sua infância na Grécia e seu amor por seu país natal , deram a Yanni a inspiração para compor canções como "Santorini", "Nostalgia" e "Acroyali".

Em 1972, Yanni viajou para Minnesota para cursar a faculdade.

 

De 1973-1976

"Um Segundo Começo - Estados Unidos"

 

Em 1972, com o incentivo de seus pais, Yanni deixou sua terra natal para estudar na Universidade de Minnesota. E enquanto ele se formava em psicologia, ele não andava longe da música, tocando em uma banda de rock local e continuava com seu estudo pessoal de piano e outros instrumentos de teclado. Entre seus estudos, tocando em bandas de rock and roll  local, ele começou a desenvolver seu estilo musical pessoal usando piano e teclados eletrônicos para criar novos sons.

Apesar de uma nova cultura, um novo clima, e uma nova linguagem, Yanni graduou-se na Universidade de Minnesota, em 1976, com um título de Bacharel em Psicologia. Após a formatura, ele decidiu dar à música 100% de seu esforço por um ano.  Foi durante este ano que ele escolheu fazer música por sua vocação.

 

De 1977-1984

"Rock and Roll - Os Dias do Camaleão"

 

Yanni tocou teclados para Chameleon (Camaleão), uma banda de rock and roll que se tornou conhecido nas cidades gêmeas de Minneapolis e St. Paul. Estimulado pelo sucesso, Chameleon começou a turnê regional - em Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, Iowa, e as Dakotas. Eles lançaram vários álbuns solo, mas em 1980, ele começou a tocar por conta própria. Até agora Yanni sabia que seu futuro seria na música, e ele usou sua experiência com teclados eletrônicos para começar a criar suas próprias composições. "Optimystique", seu primeiro álbum solo, foi lançado de forma independente em 1980.

 Em 1984, Yanni assinou um contrato com a Atlantic Records, que re-lançou o Optimystique, o seu contrato com a Atlantic teve vida curta, mas o álbum atraiu a atenção do selo Private Music, que lançou o segundo álbum de Yanni, “Keys to Imagination”, em 1986. (Eles também reeditaram  Optimystique alguns anos mais tarde).

 

De 1985 a 1990 

"Yanni – por si mesmo"

 

Yanni continuou a perseguir a sua paixão, a criação de músicas. Ele explorou o mundo da música eletrônica, novos sons e instrumentos e composições. Yanni mudou-se para Los Angeles, onde começou a compor trilhas sonoras de filmes, bem como a gravação como artista solo, e em 1987, depois de lançar seu terceiro álbum, “Out of Silence”, ele partiu em sua primeira grande turnê, a banda incluiu John Tesh nos teclados e ex-baterista do Chameleon, o famoso   Charlie Adams.  Em 1990, após o lançamento de “Reflections of Passion”,  Yanni partiu em sua primeira turnê ,  um concerto especial com a Orquestra Sinfônica de Dallas, uma pré-visualização dos eventos de grande escala que iria encenar no futuro. Este foi um momento muito produtivo de Yanni.

 

De  1991-1993

"Em Los Angeles"

 

 O álbum "In Celebration of Life", foi lançado em 1991.

"Dare to Dream", em 1992, garantiu a Yanni sua primeira indicação ao Grammy, e suas músicas começaram a aparecer em comerciais de televisão e durante a cobertura de eventos esportivos, trazendo suas composições para um novo público.

E "In My Time" em 1993, em que a coleção de peças para piano passou a vender mais de um milhão de cópias, Yanni recebeu outra indicação ao Grammy.

 Yanni saiu em turnê cada um desses três anos. E a Cada ano trouxe uma turnê mais extensa, espaços maiores e um maior número de fãs. Yanni escolhia a dedo os integrantes da banda que iriam  acompanhá-lo em suas viagens e, finalmente, acrescentou toda uma orquestra sinfônica.

 Suas turnês tornaram-se maiores  e mais espetaculares, sua base de fãs cresceu, e no outono de 1993, em apoio ao álbum “In My Time”, ele fez um show especial no Teatro Ático de Herodes , em Atenas, na Grécia, um local com mais de  2.000 anos de idade. O concerto foi gravado e filmado, e os álbum e vídeo  “Yanni, Live at the Acropolis” se tornaram grandes sucessos, vendendo mais de sete milhões de cópias em todo o mundo.

 

De 1993-1995

"Círculo completo - Yanni Live at the Acropolis"

 

Yanni sai em turnê internacional pela primeira vez, apresentando sua música ao vivo em alguns locais mundialmente famosos, como o Templo Toji em Kyoto, Japão, Royal Albert Hall, em Londres, e em  Acrópolis, em sua terra natal, a Grécia.

“Yanni, Live at the Acropolis” foi filmado em 23 de setembro de 1993 no  Herodes Atticus Theater que tem mais de 2000 anos,  em Atenas,  e marcou um retorno triunfal à sua terra natal. O concerto foi posteriormente transmitido nos Estados Unidos pela PBS, onde Yanni desde então se tornou um dos maiores ícones de todos os tempos, ele foi visto em 65. O álbum vendeu mais de 7 milhões de cópias, enquanto o vídeo já vendeu 1 milhão de cópias, tornando-se um dos vídeos mais vendidos de todos os tempos. Yanni continuou a prestar um grande apoio para a PBS e também apareceu em vários Especiais  da PBS como A Decade of Excellence, que inclui os segmentos de Yanni Live at the Acropolis, Yanni Live at Royal Albert Hall e vídeos de tributo.

 

De 1996-1998

"Uma jornada global - Tribute World Tour"

 

Yanni perseguiu o maior desafio de sua carreira - para se tornar o primeiro artista ocidental a tocar, tanto no Taj Mahal, na Índia , como  na Cidade Proibida na China. Ambos os locais apresentaram obstáculos únicos e difíceis, mas, mais uma vez,  a persistência e  a paciência de Yanni foram pagos através dos concertos de grande sucesso. O álbum "Tribute", foi lançado no outono de 1997, e grande parte da música foi escrito com estes dois locais em mente.  O resultado foi uma combinação excepcional de músicos extraordinários e paisagens inspiradoras reunidos pela visão de um artista único. O especial foi visto por uma audiência televisiva de cerca de 250 milhões de pessoas.  Yanni doou a renda do show para ajudar a preservar o Taj Mahal. 

Em paralelo com o lançamento de "Tribute", Yanni embarcou na quebra de seu próprio recorde, um tour de 9 meses por mais de 100 cidades. Começando na Cidade do México, Yanni tornou-se o primeiro artista estrangeiro a fazer cinco shows consecutivos no Auditório Nacionale. O impulso continuou a partir daí com Yanni se apresentando em 10 shows consecutivos com ingressos esgotados no Radio City Music Hall, em Nova York, a primeira vez que isso tinha acontecido desde 1993. O "tribute" tour foi a melhor turnê de venda durante o primeiro semestre de 1998, e foi classificada como # 2 para o ano inteiro. 

No Taj Mahal, na Índia e na Cidade Proibida, na China, Yanni foi o primeiro artista ocidental com permissão para realizar shows nesses marcos históricos,  em 1997 (o material dos dois shows apareceram no álbum Tribute). 

 

De 1998 a 2000

"If I Could Tell You"

 

Depois de concluir uma turnê mundial em 1998, Yanni tirou férias merecidas por dois anos e mudou-se para a Costa Leste, o seu álbum de estúdio em  2000 “If I Could Tell You”, foi o seu primeiro álbum de estúdio em sete anos. Foi um trabalho muito pessoal e introspectivo que arrancava alguns dos elementos grandiosos encontrados em seus álbuns anteriores. É oferecido um som mais pessoal e íntimo do compositor (que também foi o seu primeiro álbum na Virgin Records).

 

De 2000-2005

"Etnia"

 

Em fevereiro de 2003, Yanni lançou "Ethnicity", seu 13 º álbum. O álbum marcou outra mudança na direção criativa e provou ser um prenúncio do que estava  para vir.  Yanni, mais uma vez explorou os sons sinfônicos poderosos que marcaram alguns de seus trabalhos anteriores, mas também incorporou texturas mais exóticas. O álbum contou com uma série de diferentes instrumentos, a partir de um didgeridoo australiano, um violino celta , um duduk armênio , de uma tabla indiana, bem como uma variedade de vozes humanas na forma de solo de árias, cânticos do grupo e até mesmo letras de músicas, uma rara partida para o instrumentista. No mesmo ano também viu a publicação de sua autobiografia Miramax Books, "Yanni em Palavras", uma best seller  no New York Times. É um olhar reflexivo para os desafios, lições, sonhos e obstáculos na vida de Yanni.

Logo após o lançamento de seu livro, Yanni realizou uma turnê sem precedentes na América do Norte em novembro de 2004. A turnê começou no Mandalay Bay Hotel & Resort em Las Vegas, NV. O show foi gravado e filmado sendo o primeiro CD ao vivo do Yanni desde Tribute, “Yanni Live! The Concert Event “. A turnê gigantesca incluiu cerca de 150 shows, com público total de mais de 1 milhão de fãs, tornando-se, segundo a revista Billboard, entre a maior bilheteria por três anos consecutivos.

 

De 2006 a 2009

"Yanni Voices"

 

Depois de um tempo, Yanni experimentou outra direção. Yanni, explica: "Eu vou sempre fazer música instrumental, mas agora eu estou apenas tentando expandir meus horizontes e abrir as portas para algum talento incrível que possa dar voz e letras para o meu trabalho."

  Em 2009, ele lançou seu próprio selo, Yanni Wake-Entretenimento, em parceria com a Disney e lançou Yanni Voices, em que ele colaborou com vocalistas, pela primeira vez em sua carreira solo, em parceria com muitos novatos talentosos. 

O nomeado multi-Grammy performer está falando sobre Yanni Wake-Entretenimento, sua parceria recém-formada com o colega produtor / compositor, ganhador de Grammy e Oscar, Ric Wake.  Este empreendimento emocionante não só vai continuar a criar músicas  incríveis, mas também irá descobrir novos  e talentosos artistas, compor música para filmes e estar envolvido na produção de cinema e televisão. Yanni Wake Entretenimento assinou com Nathan Pacheco, Chloe, Thomas Ender e Leslie Mills.

Sua turnê, Yanni Voices: Live in Concert, em 2009, foi um grande sucesso. Turnê por toda a América do Norte, com shows esgotados, incluindo Radio City Music Hall e casas cheias em todo o México. A turnê foi nomeada para o prestigiado prêmio Lunas del Auditorio, Yanni Voces (CD)  e Yanni Voices  (CD).

From 1954 to 1972

"The Beginning in Greece"

 

Yanni was born Yiannis Chryssomalis on November 14, 1954 on the Greek island of Kalamata. Son of  Sotiri and Felitsa Chryssomallis.  The second of three children, Yanni has an older brother and a younger sister. 

Yanni's parents provided a typical Greek life for the young boy. He grew up fishing, swimming, and going to school like every other boy in his town, with one exception. Yanni was born to compose music.

Sharing a deep-rooted love of music, the family spent much of their time playing and singing together. And he displayed a talent for a music at a young age, playing piano at the age of six, but rather than enroll him in music school, his parents encouraged their son to follow his own muse and learn the instrument at his own pace and in his own way. 

As a child, Yanni heard music in his head and he simply wanted to hear it come out of the piano too, so he needed to learn how to play to make that happen. He felt a certain freedom with the keys .

He had other talents too. In 1969, at the age of 14, Yanni broke the Greek National swimming record for the men's 50-meter freestyle event. But music was his choice.

His childhood in Greece and his love for his native country gave Yanni his inspiration to compose such songs as "Santorini," "Nostalgia," and "Acroyali."

 

In 1972, Yanni traveled to Minnesota to attend college.

 

 

From 1973 to 1976

"The Second Beginning - United States"

 

In 1972, with the encouragement of his parents, Yanni left his homeland to attend the University of Minnesota. And while he majored in psychology, he didn't walk away from music, playing in a local rock band and continuing his personal study of piano and other keyboard instruments. Between his studies, playing in local rock and roll bands , he  began to develop his personal musical style using both piano and electronic keyboards to create new sounds.

Despite a new culture, a new climate, and a new language, Yanni graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  After graduation, he decided to give music 100% of his effort for one year. He needed to better understand the driving artistic forces that had been such a large part of his childhood years. It was during this year that he chose to make music his vocation.

 

From 1977 to 1984

"Rock and Roll - The Chameleon Days"

 

Yanni played keyboards for Chameleon, a rock and roll band that became well known in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Spurred by their success, Chameleon began to tour regionally - across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, Iowa, and the Dakotas. They  cut several self-released albums, but in 1980, he began striking out on his own. By now Yanni knew his future would be in music, and he used his experience with electronic keyboards to begin creating his own compositions. "Optimystique," his first solo album, was independently released in 1980.

 In 1984, Yanni signed a deal with Atlantic Records, who re-released the privately issued Optimystique; his deal with Atlantic proved short-lived, but the album attracted the attention of the noted independent label Private Music, who released Yanni's second album, Keys to Imagination, in 1986. (They would also reissue Optimystique a few years later.) 

 

 

From 1985 to 1990 

"Yanni - On His Own"

 

Yanni  continued to pursue his passion for creating music. He explored the worlds of electronic music, new sounds and instruments, and composition. Yanni relocated to Los Angeles, where he began composing film scores as well as recording as a solo artist, and in 1987, after releasing his third album, Out of Silence, he set out on his first major concert tour; the band included John Tesh on keyboards and former Chameleon drummer Charlie Adams. In 1990, after the release of Reflections of Passion, Yanni  set out on his first major concert tour performing a special concert with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a preview of the large-scale events he would stage in the future. This was a very productive and busy time for Yanni.

 

From 1991-1993

"L.A. Times"

 

 The album "In Celebration of Life," was released in 1991.

"Dare to Dream" in 1992  earned Yanni his first Grammy nomination, and his music began popping up in television commercials and during coverage of sporting events, bringing his compositions to a new audience.

And "In My Time" in 1993,  in which the collection of serene piano-focused pieces went on to sell more than a million copies, gave Yanni another  Grammy nomination.

 Yanni went on tour each of these three years.  Each year brought a more extensive tour, larger venues, and greater numbers of fans. Yanni hand-picked the band members who would accompany him on his tours, and eventually added an entire symphony orchestra.

 His concert tours became larger and more spectacular as his fan base grew, and in the fall of 1993, in support of the album In My Time, he performed a special show at the Herod Atticus Theater in Athens, Greece, a venue that was over 2,000 years old. The concert was recorded and videotaped, and the subsequent Yanni Live at the Acropolis album and home video became major successes, selling over seven million copies worldwide and becoming a fixture on public television broadcasts in the United States.

 

From 1993-1995

"Full Circle - Yanni Live at the Acropolis"

 

Yanni toured internationally for the first time, presenting his music live in some world famous venues such as the Toji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, Royal Albert Hall in London, and at the Acropolis in his homeland of Greece.

Yanni, Live at the Acropolis was filmed on September 23, 1993 at the 2000 year old Herod Atticus Theater in Athens and marked a triumphant return to his homeland. The concert was subsequently broadcast in the United States on PBS, where Yanni has since become one of the top all-time fundraisers, and around the world, where it was seen in 65 countries by half a billion viewers.  The album has sold more than 7 million copies, while the video has sold 1 million copies, making it one of the best-selling videos of all time. Yanni has continued to provide a great deal of support for PBS and has also appeared on several PBS Pledge Specials such as A Decade of Excellence, which included segments from Yanni Live at the Acropolis,  Yanni Live at Royal Albert Hall and Tribute videos.

 

From 1996-1998

 

"A Global Journey - Tribute World Tour"

Yanni pursued the biggest challenge of his career - to become the first western artist to perform at both the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in China.  Both venues presented unique and difficult obstacles, but once again, Yanni's persistence and patience paid off through the highly successful concerts. The "Tribute" album was released in the Fall of 1997, and much of the music was written with these two locations in mind. Yanni's third long format music video, also titled Tribute, was filmed during these two momentous events.  The result was an outstanding combination of extraordinary musicians, inspiring sights, and an unchallenged movement of world peace and harmony, all brought together by a single artist's vision. The special was seen by a collective television audience of some 250 million people. In conjunction with his performance Yanni donated the proceeds from the show to help preserve the Taj Mahal. 

In tandem with the release of "Tribute," Yanni embarked on his record-breaking 9-month, 100+ city tour. Beginning in Mexico City, Yanni became the first foreign artist to sell out five consecutive shows at the Auditorio Nacionale.  The momentum continued from there as Yanni moved on to play 10 consecutive sold out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York; the first time this had happened since 1993.  The "Tribute" tour was the top selling tour during the first half of 1998, and was ranked #2 for the entire year. 

At the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in China, Yanni was the first Western artist permitted to perform at these historic landmarks,both in 1997 (material from the two shows appeared on the album Tribute). 

 

From 1998 to 2000

"If I Could Tell You"

 

After concluding a world tour in 1998, Yanni took a well-deserved vacation for two years and relocated to the East Coast; his 2000 studio album If I Could Tell You It was his first studio album in 7 years.  It was a deeply personal and introspective work that stripped away some of the grandiose elements found on his previous albums. It  offered a more personal and intimate sound from the composer (it was also his first album for Virgin Records).

 

From  2000-2005

"Ethnicity"

 

In February, 2003, Yanni released Ethnicity, his 13th album.  The album signaled another creative shift in direction and proved a harbinger of things to come.  Yanni once again explored the powerful symphonic sounds that marked some of his earlier works but also incorporated more exotic textures.  The album featured an array of different instruments, from an Australian didgeridoo, a Celtic violin, and an Armenian duduk to an Indian tabla, as well as a variety of human voices in the form of solo arias, group chants and even lyrics, a rare departure for the instrumentalist.  The same year also saw the publication of his Miramax Books autobiography, "Yanni in Words," a New York Times best seller.  It's a reflective look at the challenges, lessons, dreams and obstacles in Yanni's life.

 

Soon after the release of his book, Yanni undertook an unprecedented North American Tour in November, 2004. The tour kicked off at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas, NV.  The commanding performance was recorded and filmed for what was to be Yanni's first live CD since Tribute, 2006's  Yanni Live! The Concert Event.  The mammoth tour included nearly 150 shows, with total attendance of more than 1 million fans, making it, according to Billboard magazine, among the largest grossing for three years running.

 

From 2006 to 2009

"Yanni Voices"

 

After a reflectve time, Yanni experimented with another direction. Yanni explains, "I will always do instrumental music, but now I'm just trying to expand my horizons and open the doors to some incredible talent that can give voice and lyrics to my work."

   In 2009, he launched his own label, Yanni-Wake Entertainment, in association with Disney, and released Yanni Voices, in which he collaborated with vocalists for the first time in his solo career, teaming with a handful of gifted newcomers. 

The multi-Grammy nominated performer is talking about Yanni-Wake Entertainment, his newly formed venture with fellow Grammy and Oscar winning producer/songwriter, Ric Wake. This exciting enterprise will not only continue to create superb music, but it will also develop talented new artists, compose music for films and be involved in movie and television production.  Yanni Wake Entertainment has signed Nathan Pacheco, Chloe, Ender Thomas and Leslie Mills.

 His  tour, Yanni Voices: Live in Concert, in 2009 was a big success. Touring all over North America with sold out shows including Radio City Music Hall and full houses throughout Mexico. The tour was nominated for the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio award and was in support of Yanni's Mexican chart topping release: Yanni Voces(CD) and Yanni Voices (CD).

 

Yanni Voces reached #1 on the Mexican Pop Charts and #2 on the over all Mexican Music Charts. A recent DVD release of Yanni Voices: Live in Concert reached Amazon's number one best seller list within the first week of sales and was a fundraising success for PBS.

 

From 2010 to future

 

 In 2010, he explored his interest in Latin music on the album Mexicanisimo.

A new studio effort, Truth of Touch, followed in 2011.
